Antique German Hanau Van Dyck-Style Charles I Equestrian Figural Box

Antique German Hanau Van Dyck-Style Charles I Equestrian Figural Box

$9,500

German 800 silver figural box, ca 1910. Equestrian figure in style of 17th century. A mounted rider with sword at hip feathered hat, pointed beard, and lace collar, points in the distance while sitting astride richly caparisoned horse with raised forelegs. The representation is a composite of painted portraits of Charles I by Van Dyck, who depicted the tragic king as a man of style and swagger. Charles was beheaded in 1649. Appropriately, the riders head is detachable as is the horses. Double domed base with crimped rims; chased flowers and leafing scrollwork with applied lizard, frog, and turtle. Marks include fineness stamp and Hanau makers stamp (JD Schleissner & Shne). Very good condition. Approximate overall dimensions: H 16 1/4 x W 10 x D 9 1/2 in. Weight: 67.3 troy ounces. #CC819
