Greek Revival sterling silver ewer, 1865. Girdled drum-form neck with helmet mouth; ovoid bowl and raised round foot. Scroll bracket-handle with cast Mercury head, paterae, and stylized leaf mount. Ancient form rejuvenated with frieze of cherubs acting out rites of Classical life from sacrificing at the altar to being borne in triumph in goat-harnessed chariot. Rectangular frames inset with allegorical trophies. Beading, fretwork, and leaf-and-dart borders. Fully marked including stamp for Boston maker Shreve, Stanwood & Co. (1860-69). Very good condition.
